The practice for the Lion and the Jewel was on Wednesday at 3.15pm-4.30pm and Saturday at 10am-12pm for the first few weeks. on the last week, we practiced everyday except Thursday. I was interested in joining as a dancer for this play because it was creative and I wanted to undertake a new challenge. The dance we practiced was West African and it was entirely new to me but not difficult to perform if i paid attention. The first few steps were quite simple but as the steps progressed, it became quite difficult and I had to practice more often.
On Wednesday, the practice was for an hour and we learnt new steps and on Saturday, we pieced what we had learnt together from the beginning. When the due date was approaching, we moved from the drama room to the amphitheatre and this is when it got particularly complicated. The transition was challenging but educational as I learned how too use the available space and make use of it without running into other dancers. for the show, we all had to move uniformly and perfect the dance to improve the presentation.
in the last two weeks, we had to potray market ladies to set the scene of a market place. The props were actual food: watermelons, matooke, cabbage and animals: goats, hens. I was roasting maize.
