PEDN summer internship

Two weeks ago, On Monday, I was told to arrange the profile for the students who attended the Ashoka Youth venture. There were many papers and I was to file them accordingly. On Tuesday, I was typing the profiles of the students problems and solutions into a template and it was not difficult except the templates didn’t settle and it took me a while to figure out how they works but in the end, I did a third of the work and finished by Wednesday with the other interns who we separated the work with. On Thursday, I was told to type the names of the people who came for the event and count and record how many boys and girls came from each school and put the totals and respective figures on the papers of their registration forms. This week was mainly wrapping up the youth venture data and storing it organized.

PEDN summer internship

Two weeks ago on Saturday was the Ashoka Youth Venture and it was amazing.I arrived at 9am and started on the registration table were I was in charge of registering secondary school students and having their names written on an identification card. This went on for about 2 hours and the youth venture began with speeches from many Ashoka fellows from East Africa. Their was an icebreaker and the students were eventually split into groups to talk about the problems in their communities and how to change them. I went and sat with a group and learnt how many problems were faced by different communities far away from Kampala and I contributed with ways to make the solution better like others in the group did. In the afternoon, we skyped with Ashoka fellows from the UK, USA, Kenya, Tanzania and it was a good experience in sharing ideas and the similarities between different places and people. At about 3pm we cut a cake and celebrated the event after speeches from the Minister of finance and Gloria Wavamunno who founded a school to help students to learn better. Overall I enjoyed the day and it was a lot of fun to interact and meet new people.

PEDN summer internship

Last week was not as busy. On Monday, I mainly did my Internal Assessments for school but on Tuesday, I was told to add emails to the website management part of the official website and the list was very long. I did that for about the entire week. On Thursday, there was a training for SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) this would help accumulate data from surveys either questionnaires or interviews. The data is coded in numbers and those numbers are entered. The app gives you the frequency, graphs and any depiction and translation of data needed. The program is very useful for any data collection and processing. I learnt how to use the program although I am a bit rusty with the basics. It was very important and useful for me to learn about this software and it uses.

PEDN- summer work experience

This was my first week at PEDN and I found out that they had changed locations from Ntinda to Kiwatule. It doesn't matter. I usually start at 9 am and end at 3pm and on Monday, I found out that the coming Saturday was a youth venture event at Hill preparatory school in Naguru. Martin my supervisor started me with designing the register sheet for the day and the certificates too. I did 2 of them and they choose one. Of course it needed a bit of tweaking since this was my first time to design a certificate and I learnt that it was not very difficult. It was just like designing the yearbook pages and the advertisement for the events. On Tuesday, I was told to input metadata options so that major search sites could recognise the pages on the internet with those key words. It took me longer than it should due to the slow internet connection but I finished it the next day. From this I learnt that key words are helpful to spread awareness as it helps the sites be located and that new things are very diverse.
On Thursday, I was told to take the Aflateen website challenges but the internet connection was bad so it wasn't possible but I saw that through technology, the spread of financial education can be accessed by this generation who are mainly using the internet for knowledge and fun. The challenges looked fun and you won badges and certificated plus reflections are needed for what you have learnt. Today, I am responsible for looking for videos to show for the Saturday youth venture and downloading them so that they could be ready by tomorrow. This week has been a great learning experience as I did things that I have never done before and hope to continue this for the next few weeks.
